Domaine de La Vougeraie

Burgundy, France

Vinumae presents: Domaine de La Vougeraie

The Vougeraie estate was founded in 1999 around an entity and a name. La Vougeraie was the family home, a symbol of the ties between Jean-Claude Boisset and his children, Nathalie and Jean-Charles, who are at the origin of the revival of this area. On the other hand, Vougeot is home to one third of its vineyards. The passion for wine and the constant quest for quality have driven the estate for decades.

The estate now covers 44 hectares, spread from Gevrey-Chambertin to the Montrachet hill, with vines in almost all the villages: the Côte de Nuits appellation comes from Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges, while the Côte de Beaune appellation are from Savigny-Les-Beaune, Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. The climates of the region are best represented by the white wines Corton-Charlemagne, Charlemagne, Bâtard-Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet. Last but not least is the famous monopoly adjacent to Clos de Vougeot, a rare enclave of Chardonnay in Côte de Nuits and home to the Vougeot 1er cru Clos Blanc de Vougeot. In this part of Côte de Nuits, Domaine de La Vougeraie has several premiers crus and grand crus, including the exceptional Bonnes-Mares and Musigny, the Charmes-Chambertin "Les Mazoyères", the legendary Clos de Vougeot and the Corton "Clos du Roi" in Côte de Beaune, which was once reserved to the royalty.

The estate is made up of a mosaic of plots spreading over 44 hectares, two thirds of which are in Côte de Nuits and one third in Côte de Beaune, and covering 37 appellations in total. At the heart of the estate is the mythical monopoly “Vougeot Premier Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot”.

Since its founding in 1999, the estate has adopted organic farming practices and quickly obtained the biodynamic certification. The entire estate is now run using biodynamic methods, respectful plowing of the land and small yields.

The winemaking is done in tapered wooden vats, with a high percentage of whole cluster (when the vintage allows it) or up to 100% of whole cluster for the great wines. The pressing is done with a vertical press, in order to respect the harvest as best as possible and extract very little astringent matter. The juices are then aged for 12 to 18 months in half-barrels and barrels with a very moderate proportion of new oak.
The wood is a carefully considered element of the barrels. The estate buys and ages the staves for three years before entrusting them to eight different coopers so that they bring their touch to the barrels.

At Domaine de La Vougeraie, Sylvie Poillot manages the 44 hectares property. In 2007, Sylvie Poillot arrived at the estate to manage the commercial operations of the company, while Pierre Vincent was in charge of the vineyards and the vinification. They jointly imprinted a unique style on the wines and placed the estate on the international scene. Ten years after her arrival, Sylvie took the reins of La Vougeraie alone, surrounded by a formidable and talented cellar and vine team.

The Domaine de La Vougeraie was born from the merger of estates acquired over time and the vines of their respective families. Its history dates back to 1964, when the first plot of land, Les Evocelles, in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, was bought by the father of Nathalie & Jean-Charles Boisset.

Twenty years later came the vines around Vougeot and the first two vines in Côte de Beaune. In 1996, the estate bought its third plot in Beaune. The estate expansion was crowned by the acquisition of Le Clos Blanc, the monopoly that produces its famous premier cru. From these vines in the family village was born Domaine de la Vougeraie, as a return to the owners’ cherished childhood.
