Domaine Roulot

Burgundy, France

Vinumae presents: Domaine Roulot

The Roulot estate, located in Meursault and managed by Michèle and Jean-Marc Roulot, is with no doubt one of the most emblematic properties of Côte de Beaune. Jean-Marc decided very early to vinify his different plots separately in order to let the terroirs speak for themselves. The Vireuils, the Meix Chavaux and the Tillets fully express the identities of each plot. Others, like the Tessons, have even been granted a more honorary status: "Clos de mon Plaisir", which has now been renamed Clos du Haut Tesson "À mon plaisir". The premiers crus of the estate give way to a symphony of intense flavors: the smoothness of the Charmes, the sap of the Clos des Bouchères or the mineral richness of the Perrières. Each facet of the Meursault appellation is masterfully represented by the chiselled and pure style and the elegance so characteristic of Roulot’s wines.

The Guy Roulot estate is located in Côte de Beaune, in Meursault village. It produces mainly white wines, but also a small range of red wines in Monthélie and Auxey-Duresses villages. The white wines come predominantly from the terroirs of Meursault, including the famous premiers crus Charmes, Perrières and Clos des Bouchères.
The estate started farming biodynamically in 2000 and became fully biodynamic in 2012. However, the certification process began more recently and the first certification was given to the 2013 vintage. The grapes are harvested manually in small crates. Once in the cellar, the grapes are sorted, if necessary, and pressed directly with a pneumatic press to extract the juice. The fermentation is done in barrels using only indigenous yeasts. After aging for twelve months in casks, the wines spend their second winter in stainless steel vats for other six months. The wines are fined with tiny doses of casein and bentonite, and finally undergo a very light filtration before bottling. Sulfur is added at homeopathic levels.

The estate is co-managed by the siblings Michèle and Jean-Marc. She runs the administrative and commercial activities, while he is in charge of the vineyard and the wine.

Jean-Marc Roulot is a world famous winemaker renowned for his pure and crystalline white wines, but he is also an artist involved in film and theater.

According to the records of the civil registry of Meursault, on July 10th, 1827, Hugues Roulot, a winegrower from Meursault, who was born in 1798, married Marguerite Nudan. This is the oldest trace of the Roulot family in the municipality.

Guillaume, a son born of this marriage in 1830, married Marie Garnier in 1856, and their marriage certificate states that he also was a winegrower in Meursault.

Paul was born from Guillaume and Marie in 1863. As a parallel activity to the vineyard, he developed the distilling activity in Meursault. In 1890, he married Alexandrine Ponnelle, who gave him three children, including Paul Guillaume, born in 1899.

Paul Guillaume built upon the work of previous generations. He bought the Meursault Meix Chavaux and the Meursault Charmes plots, and contributed to the takeoff of the distillery business.

His son Guy, born in 1929, succeeded him in the business. By the end of the 1950s, he and his wife, Geneviève, built the foundations of the current structure of the estate. At that time, the estate acquired the Meursault Tessons and the Luchets plots. Later, they acquired the Tillets, the Auxey-Duresses and the Monthelie plots. And finally, in 1976, they bought the Meursault Perrières plot. Guy Roulot died prematurely in 1982.

Today, the couple’s two children, Michèle and Jean-Marc, manage the estate’s affairs together.
